Children must find it strange, all year long we teach them about stranger danger, these days to not trust Anyone and tell Mum and Dad everything. Then we queue up and tell our children to go and give Santa a cuddle, to get a picture with him and of course take the present when it’s offered. It’s an old anomaly and one that people often laugh about…..but we really can’t be too careful can we?
Christmas is absolutely a time of cheer, spending time with those you love and charitable giving. Then New Year brings new beginnings, plans for the year ahead and fresh starts, which often includes having work done to your property.
In Scotland in 2018/2019 there were 247,791 offences recorded by the police.
Crimes of dishonesty took up almost half of these at 114,506.
Theft by housebreaking crimes reported were over 13,000.
When we log in to our internet banking we are reminded that they would never contact us and ask our details, they ensure the money we move we are doing willingly and give us opportunity to stop the transaction along the way.
Do we do this when contracting anyone to work within our homes?
I know the answer is no, well for the majority. I have never received a call asking if any of our men have a PVG (disclosure Scotland) and we are rarely questioned on what professional bodies we are affiliated with. The answer to all of the above is of course yes.

- use the right materials
- Be honest with the time needed
- Be respectful in your property
You can never be sure if you can unless the trade you employ is in fact affiliated with a professional body. They don’t have to be, there are no rules to say they can’t advertise if they aren’t. Please remember this when employing someone, especially if it’s into your home. We research the holidays we go on and the clothes be buy, surely with crime rates as they are we should be just as vigilant with who we invite into our homes.
