I have Four.

I have two kitchen drawers and an under the stairs cupboard that are an absolute disgrace. I clean them out maybe twice a year, but they still become like an abyss, everything is in them, but you can’t see anything. If an outsider had to go into any of them I would be mortified! I’m shaming myself into cleaning them out (again) by writing about them here.

When you contract a tradesman to work in your home they might see dark corners and high cornicing that you’ve not looked at in too long.

Rolling your sleeves up.
Cleaning these areas before work begins will ensure your tradesman is making the most of his time. Painters will prepare the surfaces they are working on, but if that includes dusting down, washing or sugar soaping it will be much more economical if you do it. Using a tradesman’s hours to clean your house will be really expensive! Regular dusting of high and low areas will stop build up, and embarrassment if someone else uncovers them. If you want a real deep clean of your glossed paint work sugar soaping is recommended. It does make a visible difference and a great start point for a good painter.

Positive criticism.
Don’t take this the wrong way, it’s a luxury to have time to keep on top of all of this. I know that first hand! A professional tradesman will never complain, and not even let you know that they cleaned before they started.

Your money is better spent on them using their expertise the full time they are with you, rather than then being with you longer for something you could have done yourself.
Taking my own advice.
This week I’ve had the kids do a clear out of their rooms before Santa comes. It’s time I took my own advice and tackled my dirty little secrets…..I’m sure I’ll end up with a trip to the dump and a new roll of bin bags, but I know I’ll feel better for it at the other end! (I’m not going to stop cutting the dog treats into smaller pieces though!)
