3 ways to make your painter go the extra mile

Make your contract work for you!

If you ask any painter what makes them go the extra mile there is always a common denominator. The list generally goes……

  1. The kettle always being on.
  2. Asking what sauce they prefer on a roll and sausage.
  3. Asking how many slices of cake they’d like!!

All joking aside, of course there are elements to every job that will make people strive, go that extra mile. What you think will scare people off, might be exactly what makes them want to work for you.

A special feature.

1. Where some people shy away from what might be seen as a problem property due to special features, tradesmen’s eyes generally light up at the challenge of something unusual, or that they’d learned about but never actually seen. These features usually appear in period properties or converted properties. The open fireplaces, ornate woodwork, speciality coving and storm doors that look like a nightmare to you and I, spark interest in a professional painter. Churches, domed roofs and gold leaf aren’t run of the mill, and painters can show their true value when these opportunities come up.

A special date.

2. Letting your decorator know that you are having your property done before a wedding or baby due date will of course make a professional go that extra mile, not only ensuring the timescale is well within the limit, but that your space will be fitting for the special times ahead. Our decorators have families, and have gone through what many of you have so know exactly what you are feeling. By letting them in on your plans they will certainly be on your team!

Asking for advice/opinions.

3. Where our tradesmen will never question your choices they will of course enjoy their day more if they are working with a good quality paper or paint. You are contracting them to use what you want, where you want it. If you ask their opinion the job becomes personalised and there becomes an emotional investment. Asking a professionals advice shows your trust in their professionalism and of course will make them enjoy their working day more. Happy workers are productive workers!

In conclusion the way to make anyone you contract to work for you, really work for you, is to:

  1. Humanise yourself and them.
  2. Ensure they feel part of your team.
  3. Trust in their ability.

These three points don’t just cover painters, they cover everyone, in every role. Employee, employer, partner, peer, teacher, child, parent, family member or friend. To get the best out of anyone you have to give them something to work with, let them in!

We strive to do this with our team. If you would like us to transform your space to the best of our ability get in touch! You can find us on most social media platforms and of course our website.
