Trend setting in 2020
I’ve a cheek to say Happy New Year when we’re half way through January, but we enjoyed a little extended break to get some much needed family time. If 2019 taught me anything it was that nothing is more important than family, blood related or not.
There are some amazing trends for 2020! Looking to the future with colour pops and monochrome’s whilst tipping our hats to the past enjoying rattans, wicker, floral papers and lush fabrics. I’ve tried to summarise my favourites below, it wasn’t an easy job as the inspiration out there is eye catching and plentiful.
1. Vintage accents
Wether this comes in the shape of highlighting intricate coving or wood frames and panels you may have if you live in a period property, or by adding vintage pieces to a new build, this style still has its place. By including heavy fabrics, heavier centre pieces such as coffee tables or accent chairs and using more classic papers and gold leaf in detail, vintage style can be subtle and relevant this year.
2. Rich colours
The Pantone colour of the year is Navy Blue. This actually matches in perfectly with Dulux colour of the year Tranquil Green and when paired have the opulent vintage feel that people are looking for this year. If you really want to go strong, Farrow and Ball have named their Duck Green as their own colour of the year. These three colours are rich and calming and could all be used together creating spaces that would be grand yet cosy, contemporary when used in the right rooms and give the idea of comfort, confidence and insight into coming trends.
3. Colour Pop
When we say a pop of colour we don’t mean in our soft furnishings. Change up a white bathroom with a strong colour on any cabinets and towels.
Your kitchen can be transformed with a bright cabinet door, floor, walls or ironically a colourful set of white goods!
4. Curves are back!
Thank goodness I hear a lot of us say, when curves were out we were all left feeling a little unconfident and bashed by many sharp edges. I’m not just talking about our figures, although the younger generation is coming up with a very healthy acceptance of body image, which for many people my age is both refreshing and relaxing!
What I mean is our furniture. The rounded design of units and furniture is back, as is wicker and rattan, creating a much more welcoming and softer concept for our social spaces. No more hard cornered couches, curves are in and as always are soft and comfortable.
5. Cosy fabrics.
I feel like fabrics have been a trend for a couple of years now. It’s a healthy one as layering with fabrics can change a room without massive cost implications. By introducing texture and colour without having to buy new furniture a new lease of life comes to a room, be it professional or personal. Bringing the most popular colours of the year together by combining them between decor and fabrics you don’t have to make a massive permanent statement. By introducing these strong colours softly you have the chance to see how you feel before committing to walls or cabinets.
6. High contrast (monochrome)
This years trends are a definite change to the last few, moving from minimalist and contemporary back to vintage, rich colour and deep florals. Don’t worry if your current design doesn’t quite fit, as high contrast, which still includes last years massive trend monochrome, is coming through to this years favoured designs too. High contrast doesn’t have to mean bright colours. Black, white and greys are still included in this palette. That’s not to say the contrast can’t be mixed up a bit with a braver partner to keep in line with this years trends. White with duck green has an amazing effect on walls and surfaces, as does navy with pale pinks and tranquil dawn with greys.
This year seems to be about reintroducing colour, depth and atmosphere back into our property’s. I hope you enjoy designing your spaces as much as we like to deliver them!
