Decorating your Christmas tree can come in many guises, but one newer trend is how early Christmas decorations are appearing in people’s homes. I think this is great! The last couple of years haven’t been easy. It’s lovely to see people still have enthusiasm for a little magic.
Different traditions include :-
A full family affair where everyone has a job.
A Christmas tree expertly done by the most creative person in your house (probably you).
The kids get to decorate the tree and it all ends up at one side.
Family tradition.
In our house the Christmas fairies come overnight. We don’t know when this will happen and it’s amazing when the kids wake up to see their whole house (including their bedrooms) decorated whilst we were asleep in bed.
I was taught that lights go first, then any tinsel/ribbon after spiralling around the tree, and then baubles/ decorations last so they can be seen over the background bits.
Professional job.
Exerts say to drape your lights top to bottom, this ensures equal spacing between the lights all the way down with no dreaded gaps. Lighter and more expensive decorations to the top of the tree, and heavier at the bottom. Of course this all depends in your house dynamics. Sometimes special decorations have to be kept out of reach of children and pets, some trees sit behind metal frames to keep wagging tails, climbing cats and little hands out of reach.
Making it your own!
One of the best things I’ve seen was when visiting friends, they have pet rats and discovered that they love nothing more than to adventure around the tree! Luckily they don’t seem to chew cables or tinsel, but you can spot a trembling branch when they cross over it.
Whichever way your tree goes up it becomes a tradition, one of the many holiday traditions that we are privileged to enjoy. Everyone takes pride in their decorations. Whether it’s how expertly they’ve been put up, the memories within their tree of those special decorations collected over the years, or the fact their kids done it all by themselves! Even if it does look like Santa threw up on just the bottom corner!!
