If I’ve learned anything being married to a painter, I’ve learned that you don’t have to be a designer to be able to design. Having a good eye, being confident in your decisions and not being afraid to ask your decorator their opinion all goes towards a great concept coming to life.

Colour

If you have an idea of what colours you’d like, but aren’t sure how they’d sit together, find a colour wheel– and don’t be afraid to use it, bend it, fold it, take it apart to get the colours you’re thinking of side by side.

Don’t decorate your room around a colour. If you find a piece of furniture or artwork you love I can guarantee those items will be more expensive than any paint you can buy and most papers. People change up their rooms by changing soft furniture, but changing a paint colour can also give your room a clean refresh without replacing key pieces you’ve already invested in.

If you love bold don’t play it safe with neutral. This is your space and your personailty. Be confident in your individuality and it will last the distance. You’ll be happier long term with your choice rather than what the ‘influencers’ tell you you should be doing.

Though in saying that, if you have a favourite, you don’t want to ruin it by splashing it all over your walls, choose a more subtle shade if you want to cover every wall, then pull your soft furnishings together in a brighter shade of the same colour to make it pop!

Where is your focus?

Don’t ignore your rooms focal point, if you have an amazing bed, frame it with a colour. If you have a fireplace or mirror, you can draw the eye towards it by decorating around it, decal, or framing. Remember what each room is for, if it’s a family room it should be just that, relaxed and fun, in both colour and style.

If it’s your formal room why not bring that out in florals or monochrome’s. When you take the opportunity to section your house with different themes you create the illusion of space and grandeur (if that’s what you want).

You come first!

Lastly listen to the advice and opinions of others, they may have great input, but remember you don’t have to do any more than listen. These spaces are yours, where you’ll spend your time, as long as you and the people sharing your space are happy, it really doesn’t matter what other people think.
