Can your imagination be matched?
I do it all the time. I look for a certain colour or style or shape and it doesn’t exist. My latest example is a winter coat. Fur is in and I want one! But I want one that doesn’t make me look bulky, won’t get dirty easily and doesn’t feel synthetic- it just doesn’t exist! I was so disappointed but found a beautiful coat that I would have never thought of instead because a friend suggested I try on other styles.
This happens in the decorating industry too. We are asked to match a paint to a fabric, but it might not look the same on the wall. Stain a wood to match old wood in a house, or just make things happen faster!!
Apart from making things happen faster than possible we have a good success rate at matching and styling with existing materials. I know I’ve said it a million times, but this all comes down to experience, trusting your decorator and also accepting that there may be no way to get exactly what you want. (I’m still getting to grips with that!)
The good thing is if you take advice from your tradesman you will undoubtably have an amazing outcome. If you press on and make them do something they don’t think will work out like you think….the chances are none of you will be happy by the end of the job.
When asked, david couldn’t give me any examples of jobs not meeting customers expectations, on hand over day, but there were an abundance of stories explaining how to colour match properly, which surfaces this works best on and how to prep to ensure the matches are completely successfully.
As well as the few stories of customers who have gotten close to the finished product and ask for it to be re done in a different colour. Proving that bringing your imagination to life might not always work out as you planned.
Timing is also a major factor in the reality of decorating. I still don’t have my head around this completely, but it’s not as simple as

- Ensure client is happy,
- Finish job.
If you have a good tradesman all of the above will have been taken into consideration when letting you know how long the job will take. Ensure you have a good estimation of time, you don’t want to be left waiting on someone to come back to finish your job as it ran on. Making sure you employ professionals will ensure you won’t have this worry.
