Guess who’s back.

Like house prices and great government f*#@k ups, decorating trends tend to come back around. It may take decades, but the best of the best decorating ideas occasionally raise their heads and re don our houses.

Don’t get me wrong, I haven’t found anything to say the avocado bathroom suite is back…….yet, but there are some interesting trends making a comeback!

Rattan furniture.

Rattan furniture went from inside to the garden in the 90’s, however when looking at furniture designs for inside the home, there’s definitely a trend of woven furniture. In a light enough room this trend will create a warm country feel.

Beige.

Beige is back…..beige was the safe colour for rental properties. Now this tone is popping up in furniture, paint and papers. Paired a little differently this time with pops of colour, I feel comforted that this tone is back. Relaxed and compatible with almost anything, why shouldn’t it be a staple!

Decorated ceilings.

This trend made me really excited! To the point I text David a picture a few weeks ago saying I wanted it for our bedroom. We don’t even have our new paper up yet and here I am, deciding to change it already.

Graham and Brown wall coverings.

Tin ceilings showed prosperity in the past, covering every surface showed that you could. Now with covered ceilings coming back I think it’s more about drama, and decorated ceilings certainly create that.

Kitchen units with colour.

We’ve gone from white to every wood tone, back to white. Then grey was big for kitchen unit fronts. Now we see colour coming in, creating a more traditional quirky feel. Why not bring colour into your kitchen? It’s where the party always ends up so should stand out!

Brass.

I remember helping my grandmother polish her brass. Candlesticks, fireplace tools and ornaments. I never thought of it being a trend that would come back, but it has!

More in fixtures and fittings, think switches, light and curtain fittings and even taps. Shaped differently brass has an ultra modern feel with a nostalgic nod to the past, it’s fabulous.

Panelled walls.

I’ve seen this appearing frequently when researching for my blogs. Panelled walls have featured in grand houses through the centuries, but a more modern, plainer panelling appeared in the 60’s and 70’s. They were ripped down to modernise homes in the 90’s. With a white wash look panelled walls are making a comeback. First in paper but now in panelling. I like it, I really do! It creates a strong confident look that can make you feel like you’re anywhere in the world.

My favourite- maximalism.

Minimalism is beautiful, it’s simple but pronounced lines and clear spaces make any space a show room.

Let’s face it, not many of us live a showroom lifestyle. Don’t get me wrong I wish I could, but I chose the lifestyle of family, kids and dogs, and minimalism is unachievable. Finding out that maximalism is back (and there’s even a name for ‘lots of stuff’) is amazing news! I breathed out and my shoulders came down.

Trinkets, books, pictures and shelves filled with memories and interesting talking points are back!! That’s what these things are, talking points. We often put the most special things to us away in a safe place. We should have these things out for everyone to celebrate and ask us about. Even if it does mean a lot more dusting to do.

With trends and seasons changing, you might feel like changing up your spaces. Give us a call if you are, we can help your imagination come to life!
