Trending or Trolling?

Over the past 10/20 years there has been a massive push to be unique, be different, stand out from the crowd and be your true self. There’s a celebration of ‘different’ that’s fantastic!

But recently it seems to have gone from the world of interior design.

Trending.

Often there can be a pressure to be ‘on trend’. To keep up with what’s in and what out, and change up whatever you need to change to fit in. I can understand this in fashion, I can even understand it with education, and politics.

However there seems to be a growing pressure to stay ‘on trend’ in your decorating too.

Social media.

Our homes and businesses are on show more than ever with the rise of social media.

If you post a picture it’s a massive compliment for someone to ask where you got your clothes, shoes, wall paper or even light shades. I love this and often do it myself. After all they say imitation is the greatest compliment!

Under pressure.

The flip side of this is what I have witnessed recently. I do a lot of research in interior design for my role in our company, and the magic of technology means by phone brings up many interior design topics that can be really helpful!

However in the past couple of months I have witnessed more than a couple of articles, written by so called interior designers, stating what trends are ‘devaluing’ your home.

Now honestly, unless you have made drastic changes to your home, the way the market is at the moment, your decor is not going to change the buildings value.

Trolls.

I’m not even going to repeat what I’ve read, because I honestly believe it’s nonsense.

What upset me was the comments after the articles. So many people worried that they would be judged for having what seems to now be ‘out of style’. Your home is an investment. Money goes in to having it how you want it, and it’s an extension of your personality. Houses become cold and un homely if they are too rigid. There’s nothing worse and going into someone’s space and not feeling comfortable enough to sit and relax. Some people have lost their way when it comes to decorating.

Please remember this is your haven, your safe space, we are all being told to celebrate our differences, and that should be reflected in our spaces too!

Confidence.

Never before have we lived in the here as now as much as we have had to in the past three years. Decorate in whichever way makes you happy! If you are buying a new property just remember you are buying the bricks are mortar. As long as you know a good decorator nothing will hold you back!!
