Does customer service have a place in every industry?
In my mind customer service is everything! It’s the difference between my becoming a return customer or not. I don’t care if it’s the best steak I’ve had, or I can’t find the product anywhere else. If you treat me badly, I won’t be back.
Experience is everything.
My first ever job was as a sales assistant in Lush. It’s not just a strong smelling soap shop, the investment put into training and then customer experience is second to none. Like your first love, this experience will stay with me forever. I’ll take the training I gained there with me everywhere I go. The flip side of this is that I now have an expectation when I require a service. Any service.

If I’m in a shop, I don’t expect to hear about the assistants weekend, how they are feeling, or their love life. I don’t expect to have to search a shop for someone to help me. I don’t expect to have to catch a waiters eye and I don’t expect to be let down waiting at home for a package or service arranged to be delivered at my home.
You see, that’s what it is ALL about. Managing expectations, yours as well as your customers.

Are you where you should be?
I suppose the first thing anyone should prioritise is are they in a career that they want to be in? Does it make them give their all? Is it suited to them? I remember at school taking a test to see where my strong points would take me. I was lucky enough to re do this in my last job, and it was the same. Have you re-evaluated where you should be lately? If you are interested in this have a look here.
Even if you aren’t in your forever job theres no reason not to give good service. You never know where it will take you. I went from lush, to an advisor in RBS, to gaining my nursing degree and then a revision specialist role within the orthopaedic industry. If there was ever a more service oriented job it is in the healthcare industry. Day in day out you spend your time caring and loving people who are at their worst, stressed and generally not showing the best side of themselves. You have to be sure you can give every service user what they need, wether that be a patient or peer. You have to give the best side of you.

I realised my transferable skills are many, my traits make me empathetic and my personality will always be service focussed. This has taken me away from my clinical revision specialist role and into our family business.

Staying focussed
I’m not running off at a tangent, if you are going to be in a customer facing job, you should be suited to the role, whatever it is. Care giver, server, sales assistant, advisor, manager or business owner. One of the best pieces of advice I was ever given is that a product doesn’t sell a product. A person and a relationship does. You have to research what you are best suited to, and ask the people working for you to do the same. Personality and career testing is quick and a great indicator to who is around you and who you need around you. As well as knowing how to utilise them properly. Just because someone is quiet doesn’t mean you can’t put them in front of a customer, if you manage the customers expectations you can find the best person for each job.

High expectations
This subject is definitely transferrable across all services and trades. If you employ someone to come into your home or business you have to be comfortable with who they are and what you expect from them. If you don’t feel comfortable with them or the team, you may not have the confidence to ask for what you are looking for. Relationships with our customers and workers are Everything. We have an expectation of how our company is represented, as well as an expectation of how our workers should be treated.

We are passionate about customer service. No matter if it is private or commercial. Our name is our promise to you to expect the best.
