What trend is 2020 turning its back on?

Whilst researching this years trends, I stumbled across some information that made me realise, I may never be truly ‘on trend’ in my home decorating. Trends that are now ‘out’ in 2020 I never quite got a grasp of in the first place. Not because I didn’t think they looked fabulous. To me, these trends were quite high maintenance. With 2 boys and a big dog at home, it’s rare that I’ll ever strive for perfection, or feel truly comfortable in it.

Below is what we are being told is ‘out’ for 2020. There’s a big part of me that will stick two fingers up to anything I don’t agree with. I believe that your space emulates your personality, so can never be on or off trend. Most of it I never had, so I’m glad not to be off ‘trend’ anymore.

The trends of 2020 seem to be more realistic, relaxed and personable, right up my street!

What’s Out for 2020.

Kitchen.

Everywhere I turn I’m being told that the all white kitchen is definitely out with a capital O for 2020. I have to say, having anything but an all white kitchen with my retro diner theme, I am slightly relieved that the beautiful dazzling’ness of all white is no longer on trend. I can’t imagine how anyone who actually uses their kitchen manages to keep its Show Room whiteness intact? They are clearly better housewives than me!

Introducing a colour pop in the splash back, or white units with a bold contrasting wall, will liven up a clinical all white setting, and be a little easier to keep.

Another waning kitchen trend is open shelving. I think I can almost hear a cry of ‘hurrah’ with this one. As lovely as show homes look, with their perfectly placed glasses and bowls of fake fruit and pastas, thats just not how it looks in real life.  After a while I can imagine the kitchen looking unkempt as the uneven glasses and plates are stacked, with the odd piece of paperwork you put in the ‘safe pace’ on the shelf. Thank goodness for complete shelf doors to create the illusion of a tidy space, until you open them. I do love the look of an open shelf, it creates space and gives the opportunity to show the lovely pieces you have- if thats for you. I’m not quite grown up enough yet…….so I’m relieved its not a trend I have to think about any more.

Living Room.

I’m going to make a sweeping statement….. basically anything industrial and minimalist isn’t coming into the 20’s. For years now we’ve looked for contemporary flooring and clean lines. Neutral tones of grey and off white, sharp lines and edges.  Now it seems all of this is to be replaced with layers, florals, deep colourful statements and curved furniture. Mixing patterns and textures, softer lighting – the bare build look is over. Deep piles and rugs on top of wood is the relaxed style in the home of the 2020’s.

The ease and bright healthy colours or faux plants are out, it seems the same shape and eventual dust ridden leaves just aren’t as good for us as a real plant. It honestly looks to me like this year really has our well being at its heart. The fact is having a living plant at home is good for the air around you, and a reminder of how nature works, reminds us to looks after everything around us. Not just on the surface.

Bedrooms.

Where metal bed frames are no longer the fashion, neither are filled headboards. Leaving us with a more natural wood to style our resting places. We are being advised to invest in superior quilts and quilt covers, even if no visitor will ever see them, because we are learning, even if it’s slowly, that our wellbeing is just as important as us looking good from the outside.

Deep colours on bedrooms walls will create welcoming cosy spaces, rather than the monochromes of last year, and the years before.

Bathroom.

This is where I get excited (and the painter doesn’t) the plain whites and subway tiles seem to be out for 2020 and we’re told to have fun! It’s not about changing your bathroom or WC suite, but more about making small spaces interesting. Strong colours or patterns, unusual accessories. Personalise your loo to ensure you enjoy your time there. If you have young children like me, it might be the only you time, you get!

Looking at what trends are out for 2020 Has made me feel positive. We don’t need to strive perfection or simplicity anymore. In a busy household this is often an unobtainable pressure we put on ourselves. The strong theme for the year is personality and self care. Not labels, looks or price tag. Researching this piece made me smile, so I hope my blog has done the same for you.
